Senator Reverend Warnock Secures over $178 Million for Tentative Augusta Battery Plant, Potentially Bringing 600 Jobs to Richmond County

Today, the Department of Energy (DoE) announced Solvay Specialty Polymers as the recipient of a $178,218,568 grant through the Battery Materials Processing and Battery Component Manufacturing & Recycling program, a program funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure law

In July, Senator Reverend Warnock encouraged Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to support funding for the facility in Augusta, Georgia to boost the domestic electric vehicle battery supply chain

Additionally, Senator Reverend Warnock championed the Bipartisan Infrastructure law, which is funding Solvay’s $178 million grant, and helped secure billions of dollars in the law to bolster Georgia’s infrastructure and local economies

Senator Reverend Warnock: “I was proud to fight for and help secure the $178 million needed for this new facility, and I’ll continue to work closely with businesses looking to start or expand in Georgia to secure critical investments that will help create local, good-paying jobs.”

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) announced over $178 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure law funding for a potential Solvay Specialty Polymers facility in Augusta, GA to manufacture electric battery-grade binders and separator coatings, a crucial component for lithium-ion batteries used for electric vehicles. The tentative facility could bring as many as 500 construction jobs and 100 manufacturing jobs to Richmond County. In July, Senator Warnock encouraged Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to support the funding for a potential manufacturing facility.

“Georgia is open for business, and today’s announcement is good news for both Georgia’s growing clean energy economy and Augusta workers,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “I was proud to fight for and help secure the $178 million needed for this new facility, and I’ll continue to work closely with businesses looking to start or expand in Georgia to secure critical investments that will help create local, good-paying jobs.”

“We are proud to receive the federal government’s support for manufacturing technologies that will provide the U.S. with critical raw materials for building an independent, sustainable EV value chain. This grant reaffirms Solvay’s leadership in developing a robust and resilient domestic battery supply chain that brings important clean energy jobs to the U.S.,” said Mike Finelli, President of Solvay Growth Platforms & Chief North American Officer. “With demand for EVs growing rapidly, this project would be a major step forward in building a modern energy economy that addresses sustainability challenges by bringing more energy-efficient solutions to this growing market.”

Senator Warnock has championed green energy infrastructure investments. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the bipartisan infrastructure package, is already improving Georgia’s public transportation and making investments in a cleaner future.
