$1.5 million total in new federal resources will help city, county and public safety officials coordinate severe weather and emergency response efforts

Washington, D.C.—Today, U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) announced that they are delivering $1.5 million total in new resources to provide upgrades to emergency management centers in the cities of Atlanta and Savannah. 

“Both Senator Ossoff and I understand the importance of ensuring robust preparedness in the face of extreme weather that can destroy communities and pose risks to public safety,” said Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock. “That is why we worked together to deliver this latest investment in resources and upgrades for the City of Atlanta’s Emergency Operations Center and Chatham County’s Emergency Management Center. This robust investment in emergency preparedness will help keep our friends, families, and first responders informed and equipped when confronted with crises.”

Working together, the Senators successfully gathered bipartisan support in Congress to secure $1.2 million in last year’s government funding package for emergency management upgrades and improvements in Georgia, setting the state for these funds to now flow to help Chatham County open a new emergency management center. The future center will support coordinated and centralized response operations by bringing local law enforcement, local officials, and emergency personnel together to ensure residents get the support they need during an emergency.

For Atlanta, the Senators also secured $248,000 in the FY ’23 government funding package to upgrade equipment and technology at thecity’s emergency operations center. The new equipment will help the city coordinate emergency response efforts between local law enforcement and emergency management agencies.
