$83.8 million investment through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will help keep low-income families warm this winter and help prevent energy shutoffs

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) announced Georgia was awarded $83.8 million in federal funding to help low-income households pay home heating and cooling bills, prevent energy shutoffs, restore services, make energy-related home repairs, and weatherize homes to make them more energy efficient. The funds were made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). 

“As hardworking Georgia families prepare for winter, I am proud to deliver this crucial investment that will help lower energy costs for Georgians across the state,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “This funding will help many families stay safe and warm this winter, and I’m going to keep working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to strengthen this vital program and bring down energy costs for Georgians.”

LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps low-income households with their home energy bills by providing utility payments and/or energy crisis assistance to pay for heating oil, gas, electric, and other methods customers use to heat their homes. LIHEAP is administered by states and accessed through local Community Action Agencies. Eligibility for LIHEAP is based on income, family size, and the availability of resources. In addition to lowering home heating costs this winter and covering unpaid utility bills, the program will help families make cost-effective home energy repairs to lower their heating and cooling bills. Georgia will received approximately $79.86 million from the federal LIHEAP block grant funding program, and another roughly $3.99 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Senator Warnock is a leading voice in the Senate to curb high energy prices for Georgians. In addition to introducing legislation during the last Congress to lower the price of gas by 18 cents a gallon, Senator Warnock has successfully pressured the White House to increase scrutiny of big oil companies for making record profits while Georgians are paying record profits. And last month, Senator Warnock announced over $7 million in federal rural energy investments across Georgia.
